There are four schools on the island; one secondary and from January 2025 there will be two primaries. The curriculum broadly models the English education system.

You will lead and develop ICT, Computer Science and Business at St Helena Secondary School, taking responsibility for the day-to-day management of the department. You must plan, prepare and deliver appropriate schemes of work and develop schemes of work for key stage 3, 4 and 5 where applicable. You should provide monitoring, assessment, reporting and feedback to students and parents with high quality CPD for colleagues. Assisting Primary School staff with ICT curriculum development and with staff training in teaching ICT across the schools, you will also contribute to the teaching of ICT & Computing in Adult Education.

Holding a UK teaching qualification and QTS, with degree level qualification in ICT or equivalent, you have a background in teaching ICT and/or Computing at key stages 3, 4 and 5. You have already worked overseas, preferably in a developing economy and have specific experience in literacy improvement at any level. Your knowledge of a range of GCSE and A level courses available for ICT & Computing is supported by knowledge of the Secondary Curriculum within the UK relevant to ICT & Computing. You have experience of providing professional development and training for other staff.

The island’s team of Law Officers is currently made up of the Attorney General with two PAs, Solicitor General, Legislative Commissioner, two Legislative Drafters, Crown Prosecutor, Senior Crown Counsel (Civil), Crown Counsel (for Ascension Island), Crown Counsel (Civil), Crown Counsel (Commercial) and Crown Counsel (Contracts).

You will be responsible for making charging decisions and preparing associated advice in a range of cases, in particular for those of domestic abuse and sexual offences You will be responsible for preparing files for Magistrate and Crown (Supreme) Court cases, along with any written applications. You will assume responsibility for disclosure in all criminal cases and prepare written and oral submissions for any appeals.

You will be the sole advocate for the Prosecution in all criminal court hearings, in the Magistrates and often the Supreme Court. This includes conducting criminal trials, sentencing hearings, and legal argument. You may have to instruct external Counsel for Supreme Court trials, which will involve preparing briefs and bundles.

You will provide valuable legal advice and support. Working very closely with the police, you will advise on best practice, training them and other law enforcement agencies in areas such as criminal law and procedure, court procedures and laws of evidence.

You may sometimes be required to represent the Attorney General on boards and panels. You will conduct legal research, supporting the legislative drafters and working towards the production of a comprehensive reform of criminal law. You will also assist with inquests. The government will value your advice on criminal law related matters. You will regularly be required to advise the Attorney General on matters of criminal law.

A UK or Commonwealth qualified solicitor or barrister of several years PQE/call, you have a substantial background in conducting criminal cases and have run your own caseload, having experience of other areas of law.

You will act as the lead engineer on major infrastructure projects and support all government projects. Providing wide ranging professional expertise, you will support engineers as part of a commitment to succession planning and partnership work with the private sector, leading a small technical team with a focus on training, development and mentorship.

You must give technical engineering support for all construction activities from greenfield through to refurbishment projects, with engineering advice on the design and physical integrity of buildings and other large structures, plus engineering input into construction related activities.

Providing structural engineering input, specifically structural designs and review of designs by others, you will take the lead on specifying the most appropriate materials and structural forms for each construction project. You will also offer civil engineering input into projects, undertaking designs, producing specifications and giving contractual advice where required.

Acting as the Engineer/Client’s representative on construction contracts, you will offer engineering advice to stakeholders on options to deliver projects and will carry out and /or validate topographical and geotechnical surveys to determine the suitability of ground conditions. You must ensure that projects comply with legal requirements.

Holding a level 6 or 7 qualification in an appropriate technical discipline you have Chartered Engineer status with ICE, IStructE or equivalent, supported by extensive civil and structural knowledge. Having already managed and supported a group of staff, your background includes Design, Design Supervision, Project/Contract Management and site supervision roles. You have extensive knowledge of structural design to British/European Standards in steel, concrete, timber and composite materials, for a range of structure types such as buildings, bridges, roads, drainage works and retaining structures.

With experience of working to the RIBA Plan of Works 2020, you have worked with various contracts, such as FIDIC, ICC, JCT and NEC, and analysed and interpreted information to develop solutions or solve problems. You have also managed budgets, resources and funding.

St Helena is one of three islands that form part of the United Kingdom Overseas Territorial Grouping: St Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha, in the South Atlantic Ocean.  The legal systems of the territory are based on English law, as modified by various local enactments.

Of the three, St Helena is the largest by geographical area, population and judicial caseload. The Supreme Court usually sits once or twice a year, with much business handled remotely, however there will be chance to visit the island for court sitting. The duration of sitting will depend on business needs; this could be approximately four weeks per sitting. Interlocutory applications can be dealt with remotely and can be frequent, and appeals are normally determined on written submissions. The frequency of sittings of the locally constituted Magistrates’ Court varies.

The Supreme Court deals with the most serious cases and as its only judge, you must be prepared to deal with cases in unfamiliar legal areas and diversify your knowledge.  St. Helena really is a unique place for a unique career.

You will also be appointed President of the Judicial Services Commission, recommending the appointment of all judicial officers and equal rights commissioners to the Governor.  As head of the judiciary you will have an overarching responsibility of the Chief and Lay Magistrates.

You will be a Solicitor or Barrister qualified in England and Wales, or comparably qualified in Scotland, Northern Ireland, or a Commonwealth or EU jurisdiction, and have a substantial background in civil and criminal work and are eligible for appointment to judicial office. Current experience in judicial or quasi-judicial office must be supported by authority to sit on cases involving serious sexual offences and on civil cases with a minimum of 30 days sitting experience.

The 22-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care. It has a two-bed ICU, an operating theatre, a radiology suite with CT-Scan, X-ray, Mammography and Ultrasound facilities. Patients with complex needs or requiring specialist interventions are referred overseas, mainly to South Africa and the UK. 50 nursing staff support seven expatriate Medical Officers including four GP/MO, an Anaesthetist, Obstetrician and a General Surgeon. Various specialists visit the island based on patient needs. The team is supported by an Emergency Response team.

Responsible for a Staff Nurse and a Health Care Assistant, you will promote a high standard of evidence-based theatre and general nursing care, adopting a team approach to problem-solving and utilising your excellent communication, management, and organisational abilities, having scrub and anaesthetic skills.

You will own the overall day-to-day running of the theatre. This includes acting as the lead communicator between the surgical team and other hospital staff and ensuring the theatre suite is fully prepared to receive cases at all times. You will ensure strict quality control and record keeping. Stock levels, the asset register and equipment maintenance will be your responsibility and you will take part in the sourcing and procurement of new equipment for the theatre suite. You must organise, maintain and be part of the on-call roster for theatre staff, which includes emergency and out-of-hours unplanned and planned cases.

You must be UK Registered Nurse, Degree Level 1 on the Live NMC Register, or with equivalent qualification and registration, and have a recognised qualification in Operating Theatre / Perioperative Practice. Having considerable theatre experience in an Acute General Hospital within the last decade you have substantial experience at senior level, Band 6 or 7. You have a background in the use of IT applications and in Scrub Nursing and Anaesthetic Assistance for a variety of specialties that include General, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Trauma, Maxillofacial, Ophthalmology and ENT.

You will collaborate to create a comprehensive approach to child and adolescent mental health care planning and delivery on the island.

With evidence-based therapeutic interventions you will take the clinical lead in assessing young people for neurodiverse conditions and in advising professionals and family on their care. You must also help manage the ADHD clinic and take the mental health lead for the 0-19 Service.

Producing Child and Adolescent Mental Health reports as required you will chair and attend meetings and conferences and, as part of the Mental Health Team, manage psychiatric inpatient admissions.

You must mentor student nurses and other health and social care students. Providing a mental health consultation and assessment service to other sectors, you must give professional evidence and reports in court if called.

A UK Registered Level 1 Mental Health Nurse or equivalent, you have substantial post registration experience. With the ability to identify improvement opportunities, you should be able to undertake independent clinical decision making. You will need a valid Driver’s Licence Class A.
