A principal legal adviser to the Governments of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, you will play a leading role in managing the Attorney General’s Chambers, offering appropriate legal advice across the full range of legal areas.

With the Attorney General you will have overall charge of Crown Proceedings and you will manage the legislative programme with the Attorney General and the Legislative Commissioner. You must act as advocate in court proceedings, as Crown Prosecutor and/or as instructing lawyer and manage the drafting and execution of all contracts and agreements and other legal instruments

You will develop the Attorney General’s Chambers to reflect the changing needs of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha and ensure that the Governor, Chief Minister, Ministers, Administrators and relevant officials have access to professional advice on legal matters. You will Identify and advise on priorities, challenges, risks and strategies for improvement across all aspects of legislation and other legal matters. When authorised you will be Acting Attorney General; serving as a non-voting member of Executive and Legislative Councils

Qualified as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales (or equivalent in another common law jurisdiction) with a current practising certificate, you will have substantial post-qualification experience that includes public and private law, commercial and contract matters, extensive drafting experience, with civil and criminal litigation.  Your advocacy and written work must be fluent, competent and persuasive.

You are adept at analysing and interpreting information to develop solutions or solve problems and with your background in managing organisational experts outside your own professional area you have supervised the drafting of legislation and provided legal advice to Government.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
