Advisory Teacher (English)
St Helena Island, South Atlantic
2 years FTC available immediately
£34k-£36k pa, depending on experience and qualifications, plus International Supplement
Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. There are three schools on the island; one secondary and two primaries. The curriculum broadly models the English education system.
Adhering to COBIS standard 7, you will teach secondary level English using formative assessment tools such as target setting and quality feedback. You must collaboratively develop appropriate syllabi, schemes of work and materials using positive behaviour management strategies.
You should understand and integrate COBIS standards 2 (Student Welfare) and 5 (Ethos and Values) into teaching practice and daily classroom routines. Proactively participating in school events, parents’ evenings and the PTA etc., you must attend relevant CPD courses and all Staff Development Days.
Holding UK Qualified Teacher Status (B Ed, PGCE or IPGCE) or equivalent qualification, you have recent and relevant experience of teaching in a secondary school and in teaching the UK Curriculum.
You will need good IT skills and be competent in using ICT systems and programmes, plus organisational and methodical skills with the ability to plan and manage your workload. Calm under pressure, you have a caring and polite manner with the ability to show patience, tolerance and understanding. With a passion for teaching, and with high expectations of your students, you apply objective judgement, showing the ability to motivate and inspire.
In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
