We are looking for Specialist Anaesthetist/Intensivists to join our team of Medical Officers on a long term basis.
You’ll need to be a medical practitioner with a broad range of skills, happy to operate in very remote and challenging conditions, showcasing your adaptability and experience across varied medical situations.
The 24 bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care. Focussed on preoperative preparation of surgical patients, you will provide anaesthetics to adult and paediatric patients alike, which would include general anaesthesia (LMA or intubation), neuraxial blocks and axillary plexus blocks. Neonatal cases may also arise. Dealing with the resuscitation and stabilisation of emergency and Intensive Care patients you will also handle the transport of acutely ill and injured patients.
You will also attend clinical emergencies, outbreak response and other healthcare emergencies.
You will lead, review, update and develop relevant protocols based on UK NICE or international best practice. Giving assistance and training to colleagues and local nurses you will be on-call to attend clinical emergencies and urgent care requirements. There will also be on-call cover from specialist colleagues in orthopaedics, general surgery and obstetrics/gynaecology. You will help enact positive change as part of a multidisciplinary team by providing our community with high-quality clinical and culturally safe services. This role reports into the Chief Medical Officer.
Having full GMC registration or equivalent (Europe, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, South African private practice) and good standing with that body, you have ATLS, APLS, FRCA (or DESA) or equivalent. With a background as a Consultant you have substantial postgraduate experience that includes intensive care.

As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
Our Benefits Package Includes:
- Salary: £85,000pa (total remuneration c. £100,000)
