Theatre Sister
St Helena Island, South Atlantic
Two years FTC available immediately
£25k pa, depending on experience and qualifications, plus International Supplement
Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid.
The 22-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care. It has a two-bed ICU, an operating theatre, a radiology suite with CT-Scan, X-ray, Mammography and Ultrasound facilities. Patients with complex needs or requiring specialist interventions are referred overseas, mainly to South Africa and the UK. 50 nursing staff support seven expatriate Medical Officers including four GP/MO, an Anaesthetist, Obstetrician and a General Surgeon. Various specialists visit the island based on patient needs. The team is supported by an Emergency Response team.
Responsible for a Staff Nurse and a Health Care Assistant, you will promote a high standard of evidence-based theatre and general nursing care, adopting a team approach to problem-solving and utilising your excellent communication, management, and organisational abilities, having scrub and anaesthetic skills.
You will manage the overall day-to-day running of the theatre in a team of two. This includes acting as the lead communicator between the surgical team and other hospital staff and ensuring the theatre suite is fully prepared to receive cases at all times. You will ensure strict quality control and record keeping. Stock levels, the asset register and equipment maintenance will be your responsibility and you will take part in the sourcing and procurement of new equipment for the theatre suite. You must organise, maintain and be part of the on-call roster for theatre staff, which includes emergency and out-of-hours unplanned and planned cases.
You must be UK Registered Nurse, Degree Level 1 on the Live NMC Register, or with equivalent qualification and registration, and have a recognised qualification in Operating Theatre / Perioperative Practice. Having considerable theatre experience in an Acute General Hospital within the last decade you have substantial experience at senior level, Band 6 or 7. You have a background in the use of IT applications and in Scrub Nursing and Anaesthetic Assistance for a variety of specialties that include General, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Trauma, Maxillofacial, Ophthalmology and ENT.
In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
