Theatre Scrub Nurse
St Helena Island, South Atlantic
2 years FTC available immediately
£25k per annum plus International Supplement of £15k – £21k (depending on dependents status)
Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The 22-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.
Play a critical role in the success of surgical procedures by preparing the operating room, anticipating the needs of the surgical team while focused on patient safety. Promoting a high standard of evidence-based nursing care, you will adopt a team approach to problem-solving utilising your excellent communication, management, and organisational skills. Supporting the surgeon and anaesthetist you should lead the surgical team’s excellent standards of patient care in the pre-, peri- and post-operative period.
As the lead communicator between the surgical team and hospital staff you will ensure the theatre suite is ready to receive cases at all times. You will help with comprehensive peri-operative assessments of patients scheduled for surgery using the surgical integrated care pathway and NICE pre-operative assessment guidelines, offering care and support for patients, families and carers.
You must prepare specialist equipment and be adept in providing holistic care to patients undergoing anaesthesia and conscious sedation, remaining vigilant in patient safety. You will, when scrubbed, maintain the surgical sterile field through strict aseptic techniques, preparing instruments and equipment. As the patients’ advocate you must ensure their dignity at all times, assisting during surgery if required. In line with the WHO safer surgery checklist and local policy, you must ensure that a briefing is held at the start of the list and that timeouts are held before each individual case, with a debrief at the end.
A UK Registered Nurse, Degree Level 1 on the Live NMC Register, or with equivalent qualification and registration you must hold a recognised qualification in Operating Theatre/Peri-operative Practice. With extensive recent Theatre experience in an Acute General Hospital you should already have considerable (at least two years) experience as a scrub nurse at a senior level. You should have a background in Scrub Nursing and Anaesthetic Assistance for a variety of specialties.
In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
