Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The 28-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.
Leading the development and management of public health programmes, you will focus on the prevention and control of NCDs, specifically the delivery and development of programme activities across a range of lifestyles. You will offer public health technical advice to the Health and Social Care Portfolio.
Producing reports and papers for the Health and Social Care Minister, Advisory Board and Portfolio Director you will marshal the evidence base for practice and delivery of value for money in public health, promoting population and community health and wellbeing, addressing the wider determinants of health and health inequalities. As you develop and contribute to public health priorities, you will help to audit, evaluate and redesign services and interventions, supporting the development and implementation of partnership initiatives for public health action and improvement.
Nurturing partnerships to develop strategies and policies you will identify priority areas and programme activities. You should lead the development of evidence-based policies and practices for Health Improvement, including Smokefree St Helena. and take a leading role in combating any communicable disease outbreak.
Holding a Masters in Public Health, Health Promotion, Global Health, or a related subject, or with equivalent experience and CPD, you know public health theory and practice, particularly in reducing health inequalities, health and care provision, health improvement and the wider determinants of health.
You have a background in developing and leading a public health approach to change at strategic level. You can synthesise, interpret and successfully apply information and evidence from multiple sources about the population’s health and wellbeing, to inform planning and strategic action. Able to influence and motivate senior leaders and organisations to contribute to evidence-based approaches, you can undertake evaluations to effectively measure the outcome and public health benefit of programmes and interventions.
In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
