£70k pa, depending on experience and qualifications, plus International Supplement

In this vital role you will support the Dental team in providing a full range of general dental services and be responsible for a Dental Therapist, two Dental Technicians and four Dental Nurses.

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The 22-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.

As the Dental Officer, you will ensure that the evidence-led policies, therapeutic protocols and guidelines are adhered to and kept up to date, clinical audits and quality assurance initiatives are undertaken and service reviews are performed in order to make recommendations. The role will cover direct clinical duties, oral health promotion across the population, health information management, people and budget management, clinical supervision and training.

You will contribute to an emergency dental service, both in and out of hours and take part in school screening programmes and all other aspects of the Community Dental Service.

You will assist in the training and continual professional development of the dental team and help to develop protocols and guidelines in clinical care. Administration includes clinical notes and EMIS electronic database and you will help to develop and implement our future Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system dental module and associated staff training.

A Bachelor of Dental Surgery or equivalent is required, and you must have registration with the UK General Dental Council or recognised equivalent and be in good standing with that body. With vocational training accreditation you are up-to-date with latest guidelines, policies and procedures for ionising radiation, emergency medical procedures, prescribing medication, cross infection control, law and ethics, safeguarding vulnerable adults and children. Having substantial primary dental care experience as a general dental practitioner in the NHS, you manage patient flow, staff and treatment to maximise service delivery.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded by the UK Government through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
